Art Lovers’ Guide to Museums in Miami: Winter 2019
After relaxing by the Atlantic Ocean, head out and explore some of the best museums in Miami. From Miami Beach to Wynwood, and from renowned museums to local galleries, here are the best exhibits to see this winter.
Perez Art Museum
This winter, see the site-specific “American Echo Chamber” by José Carlos Martinat. Large-scale light sculptures evoke themes in both American and the artists native Peruvian cultures. Ranging from politics to popular culture, symbols created by the artist compare our contemporary times to an echo chamber, in which we seek media that reinforces our existing beliefs rather than challenging our prejudices.
Institute of Contemporary Art
Every Thursday until January 30, 2020, don’t miss free admission to Yayoi Kusama’s “All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins.” The special exhibit marks the first display of Kusama’s famous “Infinity Mirror Rooms” in Miami.
Travel back in time to the 1970s with “Better Nights,” an exhibit by Mickalene Thomas. The artist curated polaroids of parties hosted by her mother nearly fifty years ago, displayed in a gallery that mirrors of the aesthetic of the period, with upholstered seating and faux-wood paneling.
Wynwood Arts District
While in the Wynwood Arts District, check out The Margulies Collection, a 45,000-square-foot warehouse featuring works by Willem de Kooning, Olafur Eliasson, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Isamu Noguchi, George Segal, and many others. And among the endless works of street art, don’t miss the symmetrical compositions, intricate patterns, and lush colors of Maya Hayuk, who has painted iconic outdoor murals throughout the world, including the iconic Houston Bowery Art Wall in New York.
